The data compiled by the society found a 12 percent increase in cosmetic procedures in 2013 compared to 2012. Overall, there were more than 11 million cosmetic procedures performed, both surgical and nonsurgical.

Liposuction bested breast augmentation as the most popular procedure, producing a 16 percent increase in the process.

The five surgical procedures most performed in 2013 were:

Officials at the ASAPS said technological advances, increased availability of less-invasive treatments and better access to care for patients were the driving forces behind people seeking to have aesthetic procedures performed.

The nation’s improved economic outlook likely played a part as well, as more people had money to invest in cosmetic procedures. Buttocks augmentation and labiaplasty saw the biggest increases in procedures performed compared to the previous year.

Women had more than 10 million cosmetic procedures. That accounted for 90 percent of all the procedures performed. In fact, over the past 16 years, the number of women who had cosmetic procedures done increased a whopping 471 percent.

The five surgical procedures women most often selected were:

  • Breast augmentation.
  • Liposuction.
  • Tummy Tucks.
  • Breast Lifts.
  • Eyelid Surgeries.

As in past years, women continue to have far more cosmetic procedures than men. But men are going in for surgery too.

Men had more than a million cosmetic procedures performed last year, accounting for 9.5 percent of all those that were done. Since 1997, cosmetic procedures for men have gone up by 273 percent.

The top five male surgical procedures were:

  • Liposuction.
  • Eyelid surgery.
  • Nose surgery.
  • Breast reduction.
  • Ear surgery.

In the nonsurgical category, Botulinum Toxin (Botox, Xeomin, Dysport) was once again the top noninvasive procedure, posting about a 16 percent hike over 2012. Nonsurgical procedures increased 13 percent overall last year, totaling 9.5 million.

Nonsurgical procedures that were most often done were:

  • Botulinum Toxin.
  • Hyaluronic Acid.
  • Hair Removal.
  • Microdermabrasion.
  • Photo Rejuvenation.

More than $2.5 billion was spent on injectable treatments in 2013. And about $2 billion was spent on skin rejuvenation treatments.

Medical leaders said the increases in surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures likely indicate that Americans are once again ready to spend money on improving their appearance.

With the economy improving moving forward, officials said the number of cosmetic procedures is likely to rise again in 2014. To learn what procedure may be the best for you in 2015, contact the office of Dr. Steven Warnock today.
