What is a Facelift?
One of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures in the United States, a facelift, or rhytidectomy, smoothes wrinkles, fine lines and lax skin by redraping the skin, removing excess fat and adjusting the underlying muscles of the face. The extent of the surgery depends on the individual face structure as well as the technique that Dr. Warnock feels is best suited to your treatment.
During facelift surgery, incisions typically begin within the hairline and end behind the ear to minimize visible scarring. This allows Dr. Warnock to remove excess fat, tighten muscle structures that are weak or separated, and lift the skin to a more elevated position on the face. If appropriate, some excess skin may also be removed.
This procedure can be performed by itself or in conjunction with other enhancing procedures, which can be discussed with Dr. Warnock during your consultation.
Am I a Good Candidate for a Facelift?
Individuals with loose skin, deposits of fat and visible signs of aging on the face are good candidates for facelift surgery if they are in good health, do not smoke or are willing to quit, have realistic expectations about what surgery can and cannot do, and do not have medical conditions that could impair surgery or healing.
During your consultation with Dr. Warnock, your health history and cosmetic goals will be discussed, and your facial structure may be examined. Using these criteria, Dr. Warnock will help you determine whether a facelift is appropriate for you.
What is Recovery Like?
After surgery, the head and face areas will be bandaged in order to control swelling and support the improved facial contours. A small drainage tube may also be placed for the first day or so to collect any excess fluids. Numbness is common for the first few weeks, and swelling may be present for months afterward. Vigorous activity should be avoided for at least two weeks, and enough time should be taken off of work to allow adequate healing. Doctor Warnock will monitor your progress as you heal, and any aftercare instructions will be given to you prior to surgery.
How Long Will My Results Last?
The results of a facelift are meant to be permanent, but while this procedure can reverse the signs of aging, it cannot completely prevent them. Taking proper precautions in the sun as well as keeping your body weight stable will help you maintain your results over the long term.
