What is Gynecomastia Surgery?
Gynecomastia, or overgrown male breasts, can occur in males of any age, and in varying degrees. This condition is common, affecting nearly 3 million men in the United States each year. Gynecomastia can be caused by several factors, such as hormonal imbalance, taking certain drugs, heredity and obesity.
The surgical reduction of gynecomastia involves removing the excess fat, skin and glandular tissue in the breasts to create more masculine chest contours. Depending on individual body type, excision and liposuction may be used either separately or in conjunction.
During surgery, an incision is typically made around the areola, the darkened area surrounding the nipple. Excess, skin, breast tissue and fat are removed through the incision. If it is mostly fat that is being removed, Dr. Warnock may opt for using liposuction, which requires different incision placement.
Once the tissue has been removed, the breasts are sutured. The extent of this procedure depends on the individual, and is usually performed on an outpatient basis.
We offer gynecomastia surgery and liposuction that are tailored specifically to the needs of men to restore masculinity and confidence.Â
Am I a Good Candidate for Gynecomastia?
Although this procedure is ideal for males who have enlarged or overgrown breasts, it is not a treatment for obesity. Healthy males whose breasts are fully developed, who have realistic expectations and do not have any contraindicating health conditions and medications are generally approved for gynecomastia surgery.
During your consultation, Dr. Warnock may examine your breasts, and it will be determined whether gynecomastia surgery is right for you.
What is Liposuction?
In addition to removing fat from male breasts, liposuction can also be used to remove fat from other areas of the body such as the love handles, abdomen, and other areas that do not respond well to diet and exercise.
When performing liposuction, Dr. Warnock will create tiny incisions in treated areas and insert a surgical cannula to break up the fat and extract it from the area using vacuum suction. Liposuction can be performed in addition to gynecomastia surgery or as a standalone procedure to remove excess fat and add definition to the body.
The risks and side effects associated with these procedures as well as the various treatment options available to you will be outlined during your consultation.
