Maximizing Tummy Tuck Results: Exercise, Post-Op

questions tummy tuck certification

In part one of this two-part blog series, we looked at some of the simple ways to maximize your results from a tummy tuck procedure. Also known as an abdominoplasty, the tummy tuck can be performed on both men and women, and often has fantastic results - especially when a few simple approaches are taken following the procedure.

At the offices of Steven Warnock MD, we're proud to offer the best plastic surgeon services you'll find around Salt Lake City and other parts of Utah, including everything from tummy tucks to breast augmentation, mommy makeovers and more. While part one of our series went over some pre-surgery concepts like stopping smoking, getting proper sleep and ensuring quality hydration, today's part two will dig into a couple areas to consider both before and after surgery, plus a couple important post-surgery tips to optimize results.

Exercise

One great example of an approach that's vital both before and after a tummy tuck: Exercise. We aren't saying that you need to start hitting the gym every day of the week, but getting in some form of physical activity on a regular basis can pay great dividends both before and after surgery.

Prior to your tummy tuck, exercise will help ensure your body is at its best for receiving surgical treatment. It'll also help you lose excess weight if needed, which is often a primary goal of tummy tucks for patients.

After surgery, exercise will help you maintain this great new look. You shouldn't be trying to do anything too intense here during recovery - your body needs time to heal and pushing it too hard right away can have negative impacts - but some light activity like walking or even gentle yoga poses can help with blood flow and general recovery.

Prepping the Home

In the day or two before your surgery, it's important to take certain steps with regard to the home. Make sure things like groceries are taken care of, laundry is done and any other housework you can think of is completed - this will help reduce stress levels in the days following surgery when you'll need rest.

In addition, make sure to have a comfortable bed set up for recovery. This should include plenty of pillows and blankets, and you may even want to consider buying a recliner if that's comfortable for you.

Following Post-Op Instructions

One of the single most important factors in obtaining the best results from a tummy tuck: Following your doctor's post-operative instructions to a T. Even minor deviations can have major impacts on results, and there's a reason professionals give these instructions - they know what helps you heal properly.

Here are some common do's and don'ts after your surgery:

  • Do take prescribed medications as directed
  • Do wear compression garments as instructed, as these help reduce swelling and can impact final results
  • Don't do any heavy lifting or strenuous activities for at least six weeks
  • Do keep the incision area clean and dry to minimize risk of infection

Communication With Surgeon

Finally, remember that your surgeon is your best resource for any questions or concerns you have during the recovery process. Don't hesitate to reach out if you're experiencing unexpected symptoms or are unsure about something related to your surgery.
