Debunking Common Tummy Tuck Procedure Myths, Part 1

Sadly, the more popular a given cosmetic surgery treatment is, the greater amounts of misinformation might be spread around it over time. One good example here is the tummy tuck, which is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures in the United States – over a period of years, several myths have developed about tummy tucks as they’ve become a larger part of public consciousness.

At the offices of Steven Warnock MD, we’re here to put any such myths to bed as we provide the highest-quality tummy tuck services to all our patients in need of them. When applied properly, the tummy tuck is a great procedure that helps rid excess weight in the midsection while toning and tightening the stomach. This two-part blog will address several of the myths that have come up about this service, plus provide valuable information on areas of tummy tucks you may not have been previously aware of.

Myth #1: It’s the Same For Everyone

Perhaps the single most common piece of misinformation regarding tummy tucks is the impression some have that this is a one-size-fits-all procedure. This simply couldn’t be further from the truth – there are several specific types of tummy tucks available, and which is chosen will depend on numerous unique individual factors, from your goals to your bodily anatomy and many others.

For this reason, many additional terms that also describe tummy tucks may be used to classify variations of the procedure. Generally speaking, though, the three main formats for tummy tuck are as follows:

  • Full tummy tuck: For patients who want to address both above and below the belly button area, the full tummy tuck – also known as the traditional tummy tuck, the most common version – is the right choice. It includes the tightening of weak muscles and the removal of extra skin in both these areas, with multiple incisions allowing for a full range of treatment.
  • Mini tummy tuck: For those only looking to eliminate some sagging in their lower abdomen, the mini tummy tuck involves tightening this region with a single, shorter incision.
  • Extended tummy tuck: A more involved procedure that includes removing problem tissue in the belly, hips and even the sides of the lower back. It involves a horizontal incision and possible another vertical incision on the abdomen.

Myth #2: Tummy Tucks Are “Cheating”

Another strange myth that’s developed about tummy tucks is that they are a kind of “cheating” for weight loss, a shortcut that could be achieved through diet and exercise instead. And while there’s no question proper diet and exercise are valuable for weight loss, these areas do not address loose skin and sagging tissue left in areas like the stomach after weight loss or pregnancy. These are the areas tummy tucks help address, allowing for contouring of the abdominal area in ways that even the best exercise programs often can’t achieve.
